Immersion

Let $M$ and $N$ be smooth manifolds with dimensions $m$ and $n$ respectively, and $F:M\to N$ a smooth map. $F$ is called an immersion at a point $x\in M$ if the differential at $x$ is injective. Equivalently, if ${\text{rank}}_x(F)=m=\dim (M)$.
